A custom-made steel garden frame designed to support and display a stained-glass cockerel outdoors.
The structure combines strength and stability with a restrained visible profile, allowing the stained glass to remain the main feature. The steel edge also provides a suitable surface for the glass artist to secure the panel using lead came.
Each frame is individually developed around the shape, dimensions, weight and edge construction of the intended stained-glass design. The support and fixing arrangement can also be adapted to suit its planned garden position.
The completed steelwork is powder coated for a durable, high-quality finish in the chosen colour.

Frame design and stained-glass fitting
Each frame is designed to provide a strong, stable structure while keeping the visible steel profile as restrained as possible.
The metal edge provides a suitable surface for the stained-glass artist to secure the glass into the frame using lead came.
The frame dimensions, shape and steel construction are developed around the individual stained-glass design rather than produced to a fixed standard size.
Garden positioning and stability
The completed frame should be positioned where the stained glass can be seen clearly without obstructing paths, gates or normal garden use.
The required support and fixing method depends on the size, weight and shape of the finished artwork. This should be agreed as part of the frame design rather than assumed after the glass has been fitted.
Consider wind exposure, ground conditions and the possibility of accidental contact when choosing the location. Larger or more exposed pieces may require a stronger support arrangement.
Check the completed installation periodically and correct any movement, loosened fixings or loss of stability.
Outdoor finish and care
The steel frame is powder coated to provide a durable, even finish suitable for outdoor display.
Wipe the frame with a soft damp cloth and dry it afterwards. Avoid abrasive pads, wire brushes and harsh chemical cleaners that could damage the powder coating.
Clean the stained glass separately using methods recommended by the glass artist. Take particular care around lead came, soldered joints and the points where the glass meets the steel frame.
Inspect outdoor pieces periodically for damaged coating, corrosion, movement or loose fixings. Repair any exposed steel promptly and address changes in stability before continuing to display the artwork.
Commissioning a custom frame
These garden frames are designed individually around a particular stained-glass artwork rather than supplied in standard sizes.
To discuss a custom frame, provide:
- The proposed overall height and width
- The approximate weight of the finished stained glass
- A drawing or clear image of the intended design
- Details of the lead came or other perimeter construction
- The intended garden position and likely exposure to wind
The steel profile, support arrangement, fixing method and powder-coated finish can then be developed around the artwork and intended location.
