Custom-made steel butterfly and dragonfly frames designed to be filled with copper-foil stained glass.
Each outline is plasma cut from strong steel sheet, then shaped so the folded wings project away from the surface and give the completed artwork a three-dimensional form.
A discreet fixing hole allows the finished piece to be mounted to a suitable wall, fence or timber surface. The frames can be made in different sizes, shapes and insect designs, then powder coated before the stained glass is fitted.
These are individually commissioned frames rather than standard-size products and can be designed for indoor or outdoor display.

Frame design and construction
The butterfly and dragonfly outlines are plasma cut from strong steel sheet to create a durable framework for copper-foil stained glass.
The wings are folded away from the main body to give the completed piece a three-dimensional form rather than a flat silhouette.
Frames can be produced in different sizes, shapes and insect designs. The steel is powder coated before the stained glass is fitted.
Wall mounting and display
Each frame includes a screw hole so the completed artwork can be mounted directly to a suitable wall, fence or timber surface.
Choose a fixing appropriate for the mounting surface and the finished weight of the steel and stained glass. Check that the frame is securely supported before releasing it.
The folded wings project away from the surface to create a three-dimensional effect. Position the artwork where the wings will not obstruct doors, paths or areas where people may brush against it.
These frames can be displayed indoors or outdoors. Outdoor positioning should allow the stained glass and fixings to be inspected and maintained when necessary.
Indoor and outdoor care
Wipe the powder-coated steel frame with a soft damp cloth and dry it afterwards. Avoid abrasive pads, wire brushes and harsh chemical cleaners that could damage the finish.
Clean the stained glass separately using methods recommended by the glass artist. Take care around soldered joints and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on the glass.
For outdoor displays, inspect the frame, fixing and stained-glass panel periodically. Repair any damage to the powder coating and replace loose or corroded fixings when necessary.
Positioning the artwork somewhere reasonably sheltered will reduce weathering and help preserve both the steel finish and stained glass.
Commissioning a custom frame
These steel frames are made individually rather than supplied in fixed standard sizes.
To discuss a custom frame, provide:
- The insect, animal or other outline you have in mind
- The approximate overall height and width
- Whether the finished artwork will be displayed indoors or outdoors
- Any requirements from the stained-glass artist concerning the frame opening, edge profile or fixing method
- Reference photographs or drawings where available
The frame design, steel thickness, folded form and mounting points can then be agreed around the intended stained-glass artwork.
